After Nathaniel, Sr dies, Ruth reveals that she had an affair with Hiram for the last two years. Hiram was once a major chef who gave up cooking to become a hairdresser. He and Ruth met at church, started going on hikes and then started an affair. They would take camping trips and Ruth would lie to her family about where she was going. After her husband dies Ruth initially pushes Hiram away but then starts to see him again. After a few months of dating Hiram tells Ruth that he had met someone else and they broke up. Months later, she calls him to make amends, she is doing The Plan and is trying to resolves issues with past and present relationships, but he assumes that she wants to get back together and they argue. They see each other a few years later and go on a camping trip. During the trip, Ruth finds that she is no longer interested in Hiram so she leaves and hitchhikes home.
