It may be dangerous when it comes to reform in any country in the world. The beginning was a peaceful demonstration in Britain but it changed. This story tells about the events surrounding the famous Peterloo massacre of 1819, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally in St. Peter's Square in Manchester turned out to be a very dangerous matter in that country. It was one of the bloodiest events in history, because the government inflicted many casualties, casualties and dead during the demonstration.
It seems perverse that a film of such length should find no home for so many of its director's assets. Detailed character-work, complex domestic relationships, humour: these are elements that would have made the picture engaging.
It is beautifully shot and the costume department have a real eye for detail... but despite the sheer drama of these historical events and their relevance to today's fractured world, Peterloo fails to ignite real passion and anger.
