The Walking Dead - Season 6 Episode 11: Knots Untie
The Walking Dead is based on the eponymous series of comic books by Robert Kirkman, and Tony Moore, Charlie Adlard. The sixth season of this series following the deaths of Reg and Pete, Tara recovers from her coma, Fr. Gabriel is no longer trusted by the group, and Glenn reveals that Nicholas lured him out of Alexandria in an effort to kill him. While the Alexandrians must adapt to the hardness of Rick's group, Rick's group must retreat from their violent ways. This won't happen easily, but now there is more at stake than simply surviving. Rick's group is fighting for a chance at normalcy in a world of chaos.
This season has strongly recovered from its stalled middle portion and it doesn't appear to be letting up one bit as the build to the confrontation with Negan continues.
"Knots Unite" is especially exhausting because even the turning of the plot screws that aren't pointing to the eventual meet un-cute between Rick's band of survivors and Neegan are rife with portent.
The Walking Dead works best when it gives its characters something to do in addition to their regular zombie-stompin' duties. Maggie proves a pretty adept negotiator, getting the same deal as The Saviors without resorting to violence.
The Walking Dead gave us a great example of entropy in the world of the zombie post-apocalypse in "Knots Untied" and strong hints that maintaining the order the survivors have finally achieved may come at a cost they're unable to pay.
"Knots Untie" did what it needed to-Rick is moving headfirst into Negan's orbit and they'll have it out. But it was a little clunky getting there as if the episode just wanted to get it over with.
If anything, this episode, in addition to heading down its new road and doing a decent job of setting up what's next, it really did offer a hopeful future.
